Now on Mytilene I hope that we can help the people here who are going through that what I had experienced myself.

I am Arash, I am from Afghanistan and I live in Kiel in Germany at the moment. I came to Europe in 2006, on the 16th of October I arrived on Mytilene. I stayed in the detention centre Pagani for two and a half days and then went to Athens by ferry. There I stayed for two days and had no place to sleep. I had to sleep in the Alexander Park. I then went to Patras and just wanted to leave. I tried for two weeks to leave but unfortunately it did not work. I decided to go back to Athens.

I knew a few people from home in Greece and I found the phone number of one of them. I called him and asked where he lived and he told me that he stayed in Lavrio. I then went there and registered with the police. I then spent four years in Lavrio.

In my first year I was not allowed to go to school and I was not allowed to work and I did not receive any help. I was 14 years old and had a very difficult time. One day I went to a super market to buy food. I saw a bottle of vodka. I did not want to live anymore and I decided to buy the bottle and drink the whole of it. I went home and was all alone. I finished the bottle and then I don’t know anymore what happened. My neighbour found me and asked what happened. She wanted me to call my friends but I called the social agency by accident. The people from the agency asked about my problems and said they would come by but the never came. I waited and waited. Then my friends came home and helped me. I went to the hospital and the doctor said that I should drink water and eat no food for three days.

The social agency called two days later and asked how I was. I had been to the agency often before but nobody ever looked after me. I went to the agency and this time they wanted to know about my life. I told them that I wanted to go to school to have a better life. They offered to register me at a school. I then went to the school for three years but I had a lot of problems. I needed clothes and shoes but nobody helped me.

I worked on the weekends. There was a place where unemployed people met in the morning and people came by to offer jobs. I then cleaned or did other jobs, always in different places. This way I earned a little bit of money so that I could buy clothes and shoes. After three years I wanted to leave Greece. I called my sister in Iran to ask for some money. She helped me and somebody took my money and sent me to Italy. After one night there I went straight on to Paris.

I spent two weeks in Paris and I tried to learn the language. But I did not like it, both the city and the language. I met a boy from Afghanistan who wanted to go to Sweden and he offered me to come along. I then just went with him but stayed in Hamburg. I registered with the social agency there. I was 17 years old then. I spent two weeks in Hamburg in a centre for young people. At the social agency they did not believe that I was 17 years old and they sent me to a doctor to see how old I was.

We were eight people at the doctors. The doctor told us that two of us were younger than 18 and the rest older. Later I found out that I was not one of the two. Afterwards the social agency called to tell me that I had to give them my fingerprints. I had already given my fingerprints in Greece and knew what would happen with them. At that point I did not even know what the doctor had told them about my age and the social agency did not want to tell me at first. Eventually they said that I was 18 years old. I did not want to give my fingerprints and they sent the police. They came to get me but I decided to go by myself. At the social agency I closed my eyes and out of protest formed fists so that they could not take my finger prints. Then they suddenly said that I could just leave.

They sent me to Neumünster and after 15 days I had to give an Interview in Lübeck for my asylum claim. In the interview I told them that I was 17 but they said that the doctor had already decided that I was 18 and they could not change that. I told them about my life in Afghanistan. From Neumünster they sent me to Oldenburg in a centre. There I waited for eight months to get a decision about my claim. Thank God I received a residency permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung).

Right now I live in Kiel and I have done a language course and I am about to get my school degree. I am very happy that I can continue living here and to go to school. For one and a half years I am part of Youth Without Borders. I heard through JOG that some of them would go to Lesbos to support refugees there and I decided to go along. Now on Mytilene I hope that we can help the people here who are going through that what I had experienced myself.
